Credit goes to Dr. Jennifer Michels, my friend and colleague, for her inspirational support and for introducing me to the powerful phrase and concept of "Sit On The Dazzle."
As I sit gazing out the window while I write in the early morning hours, I can see the energy glowing from the eastern sky. As the night quietly continues to slumber and the day lingers just beneath the eastern horizon, it waits, not with urgency, but with intention for the perfect moment to rise. It’s "sitting on the dazzle", so to speak—holding its brilliance until the time is right to shine.
We live in a world that rewards speed, applause, and instant visibility. We've been told to show up big, be loud, be seen, and make an impression...and do it fast. But what if your growth, your voice, your next move wasn’t meant to be rushed? I often invite the two warriors, Time and Patience to my table with me to keep me grounded and balanced.
There’s a quiet power in knowing you have something bright and brilliant within you; wisdom, presence, potential and choosing not to rush it. To "sit on the dazzle" is not to hide or shrink, but to pause. To breathe. To honor the glow before the show. It’s the calm before the impact. The grounding before the rise. It is designed to help those intentionally pause, gather clarity, and prepare to rise with purpose and articulation. Because not every dazzle needs a spotlight to matter—some are meant to glow before they shine. Let it build. Let it align. Let it be intentional. And when you're ready, rise and shine and light up the room on your own terms.
Be curious, ask questions, and listen to understand..."sit on the dazzle".
Simon Sinek tells the story about the vital importance of being the last to speak.
Very early in my career, I felt the need to always speak first to demonstrate my readiness, assertiveness, and leadership qualities. However, this approach often led me to share information that wasn't necessarily needed because I didn't take the time to understand the context or the purpose of the discussion...I didn't "sit on the dazzle".
Delivering great content that doesn't apply to the objective, is not great content and will always be seen as missing the mark. Over the years I have gained such admiration and respect for those with introvert qualities; those that sit on the dazzle naturally. They ask questions, they are curious, they listen, and they process before they speak. Processing out loud while speaking can sometimes give the impression of uncertainty, incompetence, or poor judgment. Instead, aim to speak with intention—sharing only relevant, thoughtful content once your ideas are clear.
Consider:
This week, choose one meeting, conversation, or opportunity where you intentionally “sit on the dazzle.”
Be curious...ask questions
Listen to understand...stay in the moment
Be the last to speak...encourage feedback
